How can you tell wool from acrylic?

Read the composition label, because they look nearly identical on a rack. Wool feels cooler and slightly heavier in the hand, and springs back when compressed. Acrylic feels warmer and squeakier. The label is the reliable test, which is why Toxome scores on it.

Does a wool-blend sweater still count as wool?

It depends entirely on the percentage, which is the point. A 90% wool blend behaves like wool; a 30% wool, 70% acrylic blend behaves like plastic and is still legally sold as a wool-blend sweater. The score is calculated on the actual split.
