performance fabric is a synonym for plastic. that is not a criticism of how it performs, it is a description of what it is. the natural fiber alternative in this category is mostly merino, which handles moisture, temperature and odor without the chemistry, and it is a short list because that is how many pieces genuinely clear the bar.
For temperature regulation and odor resistance, better. For extreme stretch and fast drying, synthetics still win. Merino is the natural fiber that competes on performance rather than only on comfort.
Polyester does not absorb moisture, so sweat sits on the fiber surface where odor-causing bacteria feed on it. Wool draws moisture into the fiber and away from that surface, which is why the same amount of sweat produces far less smell.
