a top spends more hours against your skin than almost anything else you own, which is why the fiber matters more here than in a coat. most of the tops sold today are polyester or a cotton-poly blend, because plastic is cheap and holds a print. every top on this page is a natural fiber, organic cotton, linen, silk, hemp or a clean blend of them, and carries a toxome score read off its actual composition.

FAQ

What are natural fiber tops made of?

Natural fibers come from a plant or an animal rather than from petroleum. For tops that usually means cotton, organic cotton, linen, hemp, silk, or a wood-pulp fiber like TENCEL lyocell. Polyester, nylon, acrylic and elastane are plastics, and a top can be labeled cotton while still being half polyester.

Are natural fiber tops better for sensitive skin?

Natural fibers breathe and move moisture away from the skin, so they trap less sweat and heat than a plastic knit. That matters for anyone who overheats, gets contact irritation, or reacts to the finishes and dyes that synthetic fabrics need to hold color.

How does Toxome score clothing?

Toxome reads each garment's fiber composition and scores it on what that fiber does to your body, not on a brand's sustainability marketing. A higher score means a cleaner fiber. Composition is taken from what the brand publishes, so the score reflects the label, not our opinion of it.
