most yoga mats are pvc, tpe foam or a polyurethane top coat, and the box rarely says which. every mat on this page names what both of its layers are made of: organic cotton, cork or natural rubber on top, natural rubber or latex underneath. a cork top over an unnamed foam does not make the cut.

FAQ

What is the least toxic yoga mat material?

Organic cotton, then cork, then natural rubber. Cotton and cork are plant materials with little processing. Natural rubber is a plant material too, but it is vulcanized with sulfur and accelerators, which is a known contact-allergen route. All three are a long way from PVC.

Are TPE yoga mats non-toxic?

TPE skips the chlorine and phthalates in PVC, but it is still a petroleum blend of plastic and synthetic rubber, and brands rarely say which TPE they use. Better than PVC, not the same as a mat made of plants.

How are yoga mats scored?

By layer. The top surface carries the most weight because it is what your skin touches, the base comes next, and any hidden layer the brand admits to but does not name counts as unknown. A mat that names only one of its layers is not scored at all.
