Modal and lyocell hang on the same rack, at the same price, under tags that look interchangeable. Both are soft. Both come from trees. Both get called eco-friendly by brands hoping you won't ask a second question. One of them still runs through the chemical that gave viscose its reputation. The other skips it.
On the Toxome Score, lyocell earns an 88 out of 100 for wearer health. Generic modal earns a 70. Same forest, same idea, eighteen points apart.
They start in the same place
Both fibers are what the industry calls manmade cellulosics. That is a long phrase for a simple thing: a tree, dissolved into a thick liquid, then pushed through tiny holes and spun back into thread. Cotton grows as fiber already. Polyester comes out of oil. These two sit in between, a plant rebuilt by chemistry.
Modal usually starts as beech. Lyocell usually starts as eucalyptus, though beech and spruce turn up too. That part barely matters. What matters is the liquid used to dissolve the wood, because that single choice separates them.
The chemical the tag never names
To turn solid wood into something spinnable, generic modal uses a tweaked version of the viscose process. Tweaked, but not replaced. It still relies on carbon disulfide, a solvent that has harmed the workers who breathe it and the rivers that receive it. The Changing Markets Foundation documented that damage mill by mill, and the picture is not flattering.
Lyocell uses a different solvent, NMMO, which is not classified as toxic. Then it does something the viscose family historically has not: it keeps the solvent. A lyocell mill runs a closed loop, capturing more than 99 percent of what it uses and feeding it back in rather than discharging it. Research published in Fibers has measured those recovery rates directly.
So the honest version of "is modal cleaner than lyocell" is this. Both end as cellulose against your skin, the same plant material as cotton. Neither fiber carries the factory home with it in any meaningful amount. The gap is upstream, in what the process does to the people and the water where the fabric is born, and in how much certainty you get about what was left behind.
The tree is not the difference. The bath it went through is.
Where branded modal changes the math
Modal has a better version, and it deserves credit. TENCEL Modal, made by Lenzing, runs its own recovery system, captures 99 percent or more of its chemicals and water, traces its beech wood, and tests the finished fiber for skin safety. That version scores a 78 on our scale rather than a 70.
Which produces a ranking worth memorizing. Lyocell at 88. TENCEL Modal at 78. Generic, unbranded modal at 70. Plain viscose at 64.
Notice what moves the number. Not the tree. Not the softness. The name on the tag, because the name is the only thing telling you which process ran.
What you can feel
Side by side, modal is the softer of the two, with a rounder, slightly warmer hand. Lyocell is smoother and cooler, better at pulling moisture off skin, and stronger when wet, so it holds up through more washes without going thin.
If you run hot, sleep hot, or have skin that flares easily, lyocell is the one to reach for. It moves dampness away from the surface, which gives bacteria less to feed on. If you want the softest possible tee and the mill is one you can name, modal earns its place.
What it means for your closet
Read the tag for a brand name, not the fiber name alone. TENCEL Lyocell and TENCEL Modal both guarantee a closed loop. The word modal on its own guarantees nothing, so treat unbranded modal as ordinary viscose and price it accordingly in your head.
Then check for OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 on the finished piece. This is the step people skip. Neither fiber arrives dangerous, but both get dyed and finished afterward, and wrinkle-resistant or easy-care coatings can leave behind formaldehyde, a chemical that irritates skin and is linked to cancer. The fiber name tells you about the mill. The certification tells you about the garment you are holding.
One more habit worth keeping: wash anything new before it touches your skin. It rinses off loose dye and finish that nobody put on the label.
The point of all this is not to make you memorize solvents. It is that two fabrics can feel identical, cost the same, and come from the same tree while one was made with far more care than the other. The clothes you wear are a health choice in the same way food is, and you are allowed to ask what is in them.
