What Is GOLS Certified Latex?

GOLS certified latex is at least 95% certified organic natural rubber latex by weight of its polymer content, with no synthetic latex. The Global Organic Latex Standard also sets emission limits and social and environmental rules, and audits every step from latex collection to the brand each year. You'll see it on mattresses, pillows and other latex goods.

What GOLS checks

  • At least 95% certified organic natural rubber latex by weight of polymer content, confirmed by lab tests, with no synthetic latex
  • No polyurethane foam of any kind, including memory foam and soy or plant-derived foam
  • Certified organic origin. Latex from farms still converting to organic isn't allowed.
  • A chemical list, a risk assessment and emission tests, with limits on VOCs, formaldehyde and nitrosamines, or the eco-INSTITUT-Label in their place
  • Covers made of GOTS or OCS 100 certified fabric, and flame barriers with no silica, boric acid, modacrylic or other flame-retardant chemicals
  • Environmental and social rules for the whole facility, including wastewater treatment and living wages
  • A yearly audit of every step, from latex collection points to retailers and brand owners

What GOLS doesn’t cover

  • Synthetic latex, which GOLS doesn't cover at all
  • The whole product. Steel coils, polyethylene and flame barriers sit outside the 95% count.
  • Fabric. GOLS relies on GOTS and OCS 100 for covers and other textiles.
  • The rubber farm, which is certified under its own organic farming standard
  • Zero emissions. GOLS sets limits for emissions and doesn't promise none.

The GOLS label

GOLS has a single label, and the claim covers the latex only.

Made with ≥95% Certified Organic

The latex polymer is at least 95% certified organic natural rubber. Up to 5% can be processing chemicals or filler.

Rubberized coir

Coconut fiber bonded with latex needs at least 50% certified natural rubber by total weight, with a GOTS or OCS 100 certified cover.

How to check a GOLS certificate

A GOLS label has to show a batch or lot number, the client number from the certification body, the words Global Organic Latex Standard or GOLS, and "Made with ≥95% Certified Organic" with the product name. There's no public search tool for GOLS certificates.

  1. Read the label. Check for all four required parts. The GOLS logo is optional, so a label without it can still be valid.
  2. Open Control Union's client list. Control Union publishes a yearly GOLS Project Summary, a PDF listing every certified company with its CU number, country, processes and certificate validity dates. The latest is dated December 31, 2025.
  3. Match the name and dates. Find the brand or manufacturer in the list and check that its validity date hasn't passed. If it isn't listed, ask the brand for its GOLS certificate.

GOLS questions

Is GOLS latex 100% natural?

The latex polymer has to be 100% natural rubber latex, with no synthetic latex, and at least 95% of it certified organic. The product can also contain up to 5% processing chemicals or filler, plus accessories that sit outside the count.

Does GOLS mean non-toxic?

GOLS requires a chemical risk assessment and emission testing for VOCs, formaldehyde and nitrosamines, or the eco-INSTITUT-Label. It sets limits on emissions. It doesn't promise zero, and it doesn't use the word non-toxic.

Is a GOLS mattress fully organic?

The latex is at least 95% certified organic by polymer weight, and covers have to be GOTS or OCS 100 organic. Steel coils, polyethylene and flame barriers are allowed accessories and aren't organic.

What's the difference between GOLS and GOTS?

GOLS covers latex, and GOTS covers textiles. GOLS accepts GOTS as the standard for fabric covers. They come from different organizations: GOLS from Control Union, GOTS from Global Standards.

Can memory foam or plant-based foam be GOLS certified?

No. GOLS doesn't accept polyurethane foam or anything derived from it, including memory foam, soy foam, bio-foam, eco foam and plant-derived foam.

Can in-conversion latex be GOLS certified?

No. Latex from farms still converting to organic can't be used in GOLS processing.
