What Is Fair Wear Foundation?

Fair Wear Foundation is a membership for clothing brands. Members agree to its Code of Labour Practices, which has eight labour standards, and Fair Wear checks how each brand works to improve conditions in the factories that make its clothes. It rates the brand, not any single garment.

Issued by Fair Wear Foundation, a multi-stakeholder initiative · Last reviewed November 3, 2026

What FWF checks

  • Eight labour standards based on International Labour Organization conventions, including freely chosen employment and a living wage
  • Factory assessments against those standards and local labour law
  • A complaints process workers can use
  • A Brand Performance Check of each member's human rights due diligence, published online

What FWF doesn’t cover

  • The fiber, the fabric or the chemicals used to make it
  • Proof that every factory meets every standard. Membership tracks a brand's progress over time.
  • Brands that aren't members

FWF questions

Is Fair Wear a product certification?

No. Fair Wear works with brands as members. It assesses how each brand manages labour conditions across its suppliers, not individual products.

Where can I see how a brand did?

Fair Wear publishes each member's Brand Performance Check report online, with its rating.

Does Fair Wear say anything about what my clothes are made of?

No. It's about the people who make the clothes. Fiber and chemical questions need a separate standard.
