What Is CanopyStyle?

CanopyStyle is an initiative run by the nonprofit Canopy. Brands commit to keeping ancient and endangered forests out of their viscose and other wood-based fibers. Canopy then rates the producers that make those fibers in its yearly Hot Button Report. It's a brand commitment, so you'll rarely see it on a hangtag.

What CanopyStyle checks

  • Brand policies to remove ancient and endangered forests from viscose and other wood-based fibers
  • Third-party CanopyStyle audits of fiber producers' sourcing risk
  • A yearly Hot Button rating of man-made cellulosic fiber producers on up to 40 buttons
  • Producer progress on traceability, FSC-certified fiber and Next Gen fibers, like viscose made from recycled textiles

What CanopyStyle doesn’t cover

  • Individual garments. It isn't a product certification.
  • How the fiber is processed, including the chemicals used
  • Whether a brand has met its commitment. Joining CanopyStyle is a public pledge, and Canopy's audits focus on fiber producers.

Hot Button shirt colors

Canopy rates each producer with a shirt color. Any red in a shirt means known risk in the supply.

Dark green (30 to 40 buttons)

Leading in CanopyStyle commitments.

Light green (20 to 29 buttons)

Embracing CanopyStyle commitments. A light green shirt with red means there's still known risk.

Yellow (10 to 19 buttons)

Starting on CanopyStyle commitments.

Red (0 to 9 buttons)

High risk of sourcing from ancient and endangered forests, or not engaging with Canopy.

How to check a CanopyStyle certificate

Canopy publishes the Hot Button ratings for fiber producers.

  1. Find the fiber maker. Check the brand's product page or sustainability report for the producer behind its viscose, lyocell or modal.
  2. Look up the rating. Find that producer and its shirt color in Canopy's latest Hot Button Report.

CanopyStyle questions

What is the Hot Button Report?

Canopy's yearly rating of man-made cellulosic fiber producers on their forest sourcing. In the 2026 progress report, 22 of 28 rated producers had green shirt status. New criteria take effect in 2027.

Is CanopyStyle a certification?

No. Brands make a public commitment, and Canopy rates the fiber producers. Canopy describes its audits as risk-based verification, not certification.

How is CanopyStyle different from FSC?

FSC certifies forests and tracks certified wood. CanopyStyle is a brand and producer commitment focused on ancient and endangered forests, and it counts FSC-certified fiber as one sign of progress.
